Fitting solar panels to domestic property roof

What does the new green homes grant scheme mean for me?

Read on to discover if your home will be eligible for up to £5,000 worth of vouchers for energy-saving improvements under the new Green Homes Grant.

The government has recently announced an attractive new energy efficiency package for homeowners which from September this year will allow households to claim vouchers worth up to £5,000. This includes grant funding towards alternative heating solutions such as air-source or ground-source heat pumps, as well as solar thermal systems. The grants also cover heating controls and insulation, which includes appliance thermostats, hot water tank thermostats, hot water tank insulation, smart heating controls, zone controls, delayed-start thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves. So should you delay having a new boiler fitted until the new scheme goes live? That depends. Read on to learn more.

Are Welsh homes included?

Unfortunately for the majority of our customers, the new grant funding scheme only covers properties in England, so homes located in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland will not qualify. There is currently no information to suggest if the scheme or any similar programme will be introduced in Wales at any time in the foreseeable future, however, this looks unlikely at present. We would, therefore, recommend that you continue as intended if you have made plans to replace your boiler.

Are other schemes available in Wales?

In Wales, the Nest scheme offers free advice on improving home energy efficiency. In certain circumstances, it can also provide free energy efficiency improvements such as insulation and new boilers for those who own or privately rent their homes and either receive a means-tested benefit or have a low income and a chronic respiratory, circulatory or mental health condition. It is worth noting that the criteria to qualify for a free boiler is extremely limited.

Should I consider delaying my boiler replacement?

Whilst we are experts on replacing and servicing boilers, we are not qualified to advise you whether it would be in your best interest to postpone replacing your boiler. If you feel that you’d prefer to wait and see if future funding becomes available, you may wish to speak to an independent consultant or energy adviser who can offer you further advice.

Based on our long experience, we would generally recommend having your boiler replaced during summer where this is possible in order to minimise discomfort.

If your existing boiler has been deemed unsafe, we would encourage you to arrange for a replacement boiler to be fitted as soon as possible for the safety of your household.
